The Edmonton Oilers had a disappointing 3-0 shutout loss against the New Jersey Devils on Monday night at Rogers Place.
Despite outshooting the Devils 31-16, the Oilers were unable to find the back of the net. Goaltender Jake Allen was stellar for New Jersey, stopping all 31 shots he faced.
The Oilers fans were frustrated and critical of the team's poor offensive performance. One fan summed up the sentiments writing:
"Bunch of entitled millionaires with 0 effort."
Another fan wrote:
"Youre playing lifeless, disengaged, slow and heartless hockey right now. Team has no identity, and or care for how you’re playing. If you don’t care you won’t play well."
Here are some fan reactions:
"The fans who spend their hard earned money to watch these guys go for a general skate every night on home ice must be out of their minds," one fan wrote on X.
"Would’ve been nice if the Oilers had shown up for the game," another fan wrote.
"To see the Oilers get shut out by the Devils is just infuriating. And it's not good," a user commented.
"regroup and reset and get ready for next game. Get Nurse off this team and fix the special teams," another user wrote.
The loss drops Edmonton's record to 6-6-1 on the season. Jesper Bratt, Timo Meier and Stefan Noesen scored for the Devils. Meanwhile, the Oilers goalie Calvin Pickard made 13 saves in the loss.
The Oilers will look to rebound when they face the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Devils take on the Montreal Canadiens next.
Edmonton Oilers HC Kris Knoblauch's comments after the 3-0 shutout loss
After losing 3-0 to the Devils, Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch reflected on the game and his team's performance. Despite the loss, Knoblauch felt it was overall a pretty good effort considering it was the second game of a back-to-back.
“Often you get emotional, upset after a game you win or lose. so often you win a game, you're happy with everything, the way it went, and when you lose, you're negative and thinking about all the things that went wrong." Knoblauch said.
Knoblauch noted the special teams are not up to the mark and there were opportunities to score that the team didn't convert on.
"But overall, I'm not necessarily saying we should've won, but when you say 'we should've won,' it's often you dominated. We didn't dominate tonight, but I thought it could've been a lot closer game," he added.
While it was a disappointing loss, the coach tried to spin a positive perspective on his team's overall performance.
