Former Maple Leafs player Jay Rosehill expressed strong criticism regarding the team's introductions and the overall crowd atmosphere during the 4-2 home opener win against the Penguins at the Scotiabank Arena last week.
On the "Leafs Morning Take" podcast, Rosehill described the crowd as "dead silent," suggesting that the lack of energy was embarrassing, particularly compared to the more vibrant and theatrical introductions of arch-rivals Montreal Canadiens.
Rosehill pointed out that the Canadiens' intros feature an inspiring anthem accompanied by a live band and a full symphony, creating a captivating experience for fans.
In contrast, he felt that the Maple Leafs' approach was underwhelming, resembling a typical game introduction without any engaging theatrics. Rosehill said:
"I'm sorry, but Montreal Canadians kicked our a** in an intro. Ours was exactly like game number 43, and aside from that, you just announced the whole team like there was no theatrics to it at all.
"Our fans are not even going to be paying attention, cheering or doing anything other than doing some business deal underneath the platinum seats."
He criticized the production crew for seemingly underestimating fans' desire for excitement and spectacle, saying that the atmosphere felt more like a business deal rather than a thrilling sports event.
Rosehill argued that in today's competitive sports landscape, where other leagues like the NFL and F1 excel in over-the-top production, the Leafs should strive for a more dynamic presentation, especially during a season filled with potential.
Rosehill concluded that the lack of enthusiasm inside the Scotiabank Arena was disappointing as he called for a change in how the team engages its fans during such significant moments.
"That was f***g embarrassing, and no one was into it. And that building s**ks; it's just things got to change, but they're there's just no way they're gonna I don't know; it's, uh, it was underwhelming and disappointing," Rosehill added.
Legendary broadcaster calls out Maple Leafs fans for their lack of energy
Legendary broadcaster Joe Bowen, the voice of the Toronto Maple Leafs for over four decades, didn't hold back in his frustration with the lack of energy from fans during the team's home opener.
In a humorous yet pointed remark, Bowen on X/Twitter posted that if he were to win the Power Ball lottery, he would implement three immediate changes to enhance the game-day experience at Scotiabank Arena.
"When I win the Power Ball lottery and have enough money to by the Leafs three immediate changes. Goal horn replaced with a Train Steam Whistle!! Current Organ replaced with a Pipe Organ!! Cattle Prods under lower bowl seats!! You get 5 seconds to get up and cheer, OR BOOM!!"
The Toronto Maple Leafs are set to return home to the Scotiabank Arena to take on the LA Kings on Wednesday. It will be interesting to see how fans inside the building respond to the widespread criticism regarding their lack of enthusiasm.
