Connor McDavid becomes fifth fastest NHL player to score 800 points

Connor McDavid, who currently leads the NHL with 44 goals and 61 assists this season, has made it to the elite club of players with 800 points. He is the fifth player to achieve this feat, doing so in just 545 games, behind Wayne Gretzky (352 games), Mario Lemieux (410), Mike Bossy (525), and Peter Stastny (531).

Connor McDavid handled the pressure of the momentous occasion with ease. He scored twice and assisted once, helping his team win the game after they were trailing in the second period 2-1.

In a post-game interview, McDavid gave his thoughts on the team's third-period effort after a slow start. He said he was pleased with the team effort and termed it a "great response."

“You have to win games without your ‘A’ stuff,” McDavid said. “It’s pretty cliche that good teams find a way to win when they don’t have their stuff and that was tonight. We did just enough to get a win. It’s going to take a lot more than that to win coming down the stretch, but give the boys credit.”
Connor McDavid just became the 6th player in NHL history to reach 700 points *and* 800 points in the same season.

Connor McDavid's NHL career so far

Since starting his professional career with the Oilers, the 26-year-old has played 540 games. He has scored 283 goals and has assisted 519 times in this period. McDavid has been one of the most consistent players in the league.

Having played for almost eight seasons, the Canadian has breached the 100 points mark almost every season, with 2015-16 and 2019-20 being the exceptions. He has made an impact on the team with not only his scoring abilities but also his distribution. His partnership with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has done wonders for the Oilers.

What's next for Connor McDavid and Edmonton Oilers?

The season is far from over for the Oilers as they are currently fourth in the Western Conference Pacific with 73 points. They are just three points short of the top position, and the focus will shift towards achieving that with momentum on their side.

Connor McDavid can also surpass his numbers from last season. Having earned 105 points already this season, he is just 19 short of the 123 he posted last year.

The Oilers will take on the struggling Penguins next in Pittsburgh on Feb. 23, 2023.
