Corey Perry helped lead the Edmonton Oilers back from the brink in Game 4. He didn't score the winning goal. He didn't score at all, and he didn't record an assist on any of the five goals the Oilers scored. But he helped by inspiring his team with an incredible speech in the locker room.
The Oilers faced a three-goal deficit in the first period. They trailed within the first minute, and the five-goal loss from Game 3 with all the penalty issues seemed to be haunting them once more.
They scored four unanswered and then answered back after a shocking goal after the Florida Panthers pulled their goalie with 20 seconds left. Perry was asked about his speech, which was called "words of wisdom".
The player said:
"It wasn't wisdom. Honestly, I just helped them realize where we were and kind of just look ourselves in the mirror and how we were playing, and what we were doing. That's pretty much what it was."
Perry's speech helped Edmonton avoid disaster. Thanks to Leon Draisaitl's impressive overtime goal, his second game-winner of this series, the Oilers go back home tied 2-2 instead of down 3-1.
They were down 3-0 in last year's Stanley Cup Final before forcing a Game 7, so they're never out of a series. However, Edmonton wanted badly to avoid needing such a comeback, and it did just that.
Leon Draisaitl opens up on Corey Perry's speech
If not for a Corey Perry speech, Leon Draisaitl might never have had the chance to score his shocking game-winning goal in overtime in Game 4. The Florida Panthers seemed to be cruising to another easy win.

Then, Perry stepped up. Draisaitl said, via The Score:
"We wanted to come out strong tonight, but they put us on our heels early. We were kinda lollygagging around a little bit. Certainly not the time to lollygag around, right? Especially after getting spanked in Game 3.
He added:
"Corey spoke up. When he speaks up, you listen, and you do what he says. We did a great job of grabbing it, grabbing some momentum and keeping it."
Draisaitl refused to give details of what Perry said, but he said that it was a moment that was somewhat out of character for the veteran, but that made it all the more impactful.
