Longtime Washington Capitals forward TJ Oshie announced his retirement from the NHL on Monday. Oshie, a member of the Capitals’ 2018 Stanley Cup championship team, called it quits after 16 seasons with the St. Louis Blues and the Capitals.
The Capitals paid homage to TJ Oshie with a touching tribute on X:
The caption in the post read:
“Thank you, Osh. Here’s to your next chapter.”
The 38-year-old Oshie missed all of the 2024-25 season due to a chronic back injury that sidelined him since the spring of 2024. He last played in 52 games during the 2023-24 season, registering 12 goals and 25 points.
Oshie and the Capitals were confident he could make it back to the lineup this season, but was unable to return to form during the season. He spent the season on LTIR in hopes of getting back into playing shape.
The former first-round pick from 2005 played in 1,010 games, scoring 302 goals and adding 393 assists for 695 points. He added 34 goals and 69 points in 106 playoff games.
Oshie’s best offensive season came with the Blues in 2013-14 when he scored 21 goals and notched 60 points. He scored a career-high 33 goals with the Capitals in 2016-17 en route to his second-best career totals.
Oshie was in the final year of an eight-year, $46 million deal signed in 2017.
TJ Oshie retires on anniversary of Capitals’ fountain celebration

TJ Oshie was part of the 2018 Washington Capitals that ended decades of frustration by capturing the 2018 Stanley Cup.
The team, led by the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer Alexander Ovechkin, went all the way, taking down the upstart Vegas Golden Knights, sweeping them to capture the Caps’ first Stanley Cup championship.
Oshie had eight goals and 21 points in 24 games, as the Capitals defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets in the first round, the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second, and the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Final.
Following the on-ice heroics, Capitals players capped off their celebration by taking a dip in a fountain located in the Georgetown Waterfront.
Here’s a look at the memorable moment:
The jubilation among Capitals’ players was punctuated by Ovechkin doing pushups as fans and onlookers took in the moment.
So, what could be a more fitting moment for TJ Oshie to announce his retirement from the NHL than on the anniversary of one of the NHL’s best remembered celebrations.
