Goalie Ville Husso, a former hero for the St. Louis Blues who made several starts during the team's last playoff run in 2022, has been placed on waivers by the Detroit Red Wings. NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported this news. Husso allowed four goals on 14 shots in his last game, a 6-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was replaced by Cam Talbot early in the second period.
If no team claims him, Husso may go to the AHL Grand Rapids. The Detroit Red Wings have Talbot and Alex Lyon as their top goalies.
"Ville Husso is on waivers today," Friedman tweeted.
The move got fans talking, particularly about Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman.
"Don’t think anyone will touch that." One fan said.
"The Yzerplan in full effect," another added, referring to the team's strategy under GM Steve Yzerman.
"The Yzerplan was written in crayon wasn't it," a fan wrote.
One fan speculated there could be something going on behind the scenes that led to the move.
"Crazy!!! After 1 game? There must be something going on besides a sub-par 1st game. Personality issue, coach-ability issue? Idk. Something" a fan opined.
Husso's situation shows the challenges he faces this season. After a strong start with the Blues and a good run with the Detroit Red Wings, he now has to prove himself again.
Some fans also compared Husso to Detroit's other goalie, Cam Talbot.
"Dude was horrendous and Talbot and Lyon are better" a fan said.
"Yzerman saw that Cam Talbot masterclass yesterday and knew he had seen enough lmao" another said.
Detroit Red Wings' intention behind putting Ville Husso on waivers
Per Ansar Khan of MLive, the Detroit Red Wings placed goaltender Ville Husso on waivers to make room for a forward. Christian Fischer is out with an upper-body injury and will miss Monday’s game against the New York Rangers.
Husso, 29, is in the final year of his $4.75 million contract and has had injury issues. He struggled in the season opener, allowing four goals before being pulled early in the second period.
Detroit has not yet decided who they will recall, but options include veteran Austin Watson or prospects Carter Mazur and Marco Kasper. The Red Wings recently placed defenseman Justin Holl on waivers, and after he cleared, they recalled him to fill in for the injured Jeff Petry.
