Evander Kane Injury: Oilers left winger reveals the cause and his availability for Kings vs. Oilers

As the Edmonton Oilers prepare for their clash against the Los Angeles Kings in Game 1, all eyes are on left-winger Evander Kane. He is struggling with a sports hernia. NHL insider Ryan Rishaug recently tweeted about Kane's situation:

"Kane says he’s dealing with a sports hernia and has been all season. He’s hopeful to play but has needed to take some time off the ice late in the season to let it heal. Full participant today in practice."

Kane candidly shared with the media that he's missed crucial games and training sessions throughout the season due to a sports hernia issue. Despite being a full participant in practice on Sunday, Kane admitted he's not operating at his usual speed due to the injury.

A sports hernia, medically termed athletic pubalgia, occurs when the deep layers of the lower abdominal wall or pelvis tendons weaken or tear. This explains Kane's intermittent absence from the lineup and his reduced effectiveness on the ice.

The Oilers now face a critical decision regarding Kane's availability for the upcoming games. While he has scored 20 goals this season despite the injury, the team must weigh the risks and benefits of fielding a partially fit Kane against potentially opting for a healthier alternative, such as Dylan Holloway.

Kane's potential inclusion in the lineup will likely be decided just before game time, considering the physicality expected in the Kings-Oilers series. Kane's style of play, known for its aggression and edge, aligns well with the demands of such matchups. However, if he can't bring his A-game, the Oilers may have to turn to a player who can impact on the ice.

Evander Kane's absence will kill Oilers' depth against LA Kings

The Edmonton Oilers and Los Angeles Kings are set to clash in the NHL playoffs for the third consecutive year, renewing their Pacific Division rivalry. Despite the Oilers' dominance in recent regular-season meetings, winning eight out of 12 games, the Kings are eager to turn the tide in the postseason.

Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch emphasizes the importance of maintaining their identity and game style while facing a familiar opponent.

“I think this team knows them very well,” Knoblauch said,

Both teams underwent coaching changes during the season, with the Oilers excelling under Knoblauch's leadership.

Star players like Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Evander Kane will be key for the Oilers. Meanwhile, the Kings rely on talents like Trevor Moore, Adrian Kempe and Anze Kopitar. In goal, Stuart Skinner for Edmonton and Cam Talbot for Los Angeles are crucial figures.
