The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Winnipeg Jets for their first loss of the season with a 6-4 win on Monday, ending the Jets’ unbeaten run. Winnipeg had achieved an 8-0-0 record and was only two wins shy of tying the NHL record for consecutive season-opening wins, set by the 1993-94 Maple Leafs and 2006-07 Sabres.

However, Toronto’s aggressive play and a strong performance from their second line, led by John Tavares, posed a challenge the Jets couldn’t overcome.

Toronto quickly took a 4-0 lead, putting the Jets on the defensive. As the Leafs extended their lead to 5-2, they kept a comfortable cushion, even as Winnipeg fought to stay competitive. The Jets made a late push, but the Leafs held on, preventing Winnipeg from achieving NHL history.

Following the game, Winnipeg shared the score on X (formerly Twitter), which led to plenty of fan reactions.

Toronto fans celebrated the victory and poked fun at the Winnipeg Jets’ streak.

"Getting exposed by a real hockey team,” one fan commented.
"LMAO YOUR WINNING STREAK GOT DENIED BY THE 2024 LEAFS," another fan joked.
"You frauds couldn’t even score an even strength goal. The Leafs will always own you.," one X user said.

Here are some more reactions from fans on X:

"That’s what happens when you finally play a real team," a fan said.
"We own you. Don’t ever forget it. #LeafsForever," a fan remarked.
"Imagine only being able to score with a 1 man advantage. GO LEAFS GO. F**K YOUR WINNING STREAK," a fan tweeted.

John Tavares’ hat trick spoils Winnipeg Jets’ streak

Toronto took control early with John Tavares scoring a hat trick, including an empty-net goal. The Leafs dominated the first period, building a 4-0 lead and outshooting the Jets 19-6.

Winnipeg responded in the second period with Kyle Connor scoring twice on the power play and adding two assists. Connor is now just one point away from reaching 500 career points.

"I think there's been a real focus of just having attack mindsets, a lot of pucks to the net," Connor said (via NHL.com). Don't overpass. And, you know, you got a lane change of sides. You got a little ice in front of, you know, get the pucks on net. I think we were very direct tonight."

Mark Scheifele and Josh Morrissey also had multi-point games, while goalie Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves but took his first loss of the season. The Winnipeg Jets will begin a two-game road trip in Detroit on Wednesday.
