Nineteen-year-old standout Matvei Michkov is set to join the Philadelphia Flyers several years earlier than expected. While the young forward was expected to remain in the KHL until 2026, the Flyers were able to bring him over earlier than expected.
Following an impressive display at the team's second rookie game against the New York Rangers, there has been plenty of talk surrounding Michkov's ceiling. As a talented two-way forward, the sky seems to be the limit with Michkov.
Philadelphia GM Daniel Briere spoke with the media about his future with the team and development under coach John Tortorella. As he explained, a seasoned professional like Tortorella is exactly what Michkov needs to learn the ropes and become the best player he can be, via ESPN's Greg Wyshynski:
“There’s going to be some fireworks. But he’s going to teach him to be a pro. He’s going to teach him to be the best player he can be.”
The comments come on the heels of Michkov lighting up the PPL Center in Allentown PA, where the seventh overall pick of the 2023 draft notched a game-winner late in Friday's game following a shootout loss in their first meeting.
Given the fact that Matvei Michkov has parted ways with the KHL and joined the team earlier than expected, there are plenty of reasons for the Flyers' front office to be optimistic.
Philadelphia Flyers optimistic about season ahead for Matvei Michkov as young standout gets acclimated in Philly
While Matvei Michkov is getting familiarized with teammates, coaches and staff members before the start of the 2024-25 NHL season, he's also notably acclimating to Philadelphia. At just 19 years old, one of his biggest hurdles has been the language barrier, however, that hasn't stopped the young forward.
While speaking with The Athletic, Philadelphia Flyers director of player development Riley Armstrong explained that things are going great. While a language barrier may still exist between the two sides, he explained that Michkov hasn't let the language barrier stop him from building relationships within the organization.
For example, Michkov and Armstrong had been communicating via text before he ever set foot on American soil this summer. In addition, 2022 sixth-round pick Hunter McDonald has also been building a relationship with Matvei Michkov despite the language barrier.
As he explained, Michkov felt comfortable this summer despite the change of scenery. In addition to their time spent on the ice together at the Flyers' rookie training camp, they've also been spending time together off the ice as well.
With his English getting better and a bright future ahead, the 2024-25 season is expected to be a big one for Michkov.
