Hockey Hall of Famer Henrik Lundqvist believes the Edmonton Oilers should make a goalie change for Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final. On NHLonTNT on Saturday, Lundqvist said that Edmonton should return to Stuart Skinner for the all-important game.
Calvin Pickard started Game 5 for Edmonton and stopped 14 of 18 shots, while Florida's fifth was an empty-net goal. Pickard didn't get much support until the third period as the Florida Panthers quickly responded to both Oilers goals.
Pickard played well in Game 4 after replacing Skinner in the second period and helped Edmonton win. Lundqvist acknowledged Pickard "amazing job" in Game 4 but wasn't happy with his effort in Game 5 as the Edmonton Oilers lost 5-2 on Saturday.
"I’m going back to Skinner. Yep, it's the number one guy.... Tonight, I didn't think it was that good," Lundqvist said.
He expected Pickard to stop a few of those Florida goals.
"Really bad goals, but I would have wanted one or two saves on the four, really."
Stuart Skinner has been the Oilers' starting goalie all season. Lundqvist said that Skinner should get the chance to start again.
"In the end, Stu has been the starter throughout the year. I think he earned this opportunity to try to make a difference for them in game six," he added.
Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final will be played on Tuesday at Amerant Bank Arena in Florida.
Oilers coach and forward Nugent-Hopkins show confidence in team despite Game 5 loss
After the Game 5 loss, Edmonton forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said that the team knows they can win and that it’s about finding a way to do it.
"We know we can get it done, it's just a matter of going out there & finding a way to do it," Nugent-Hopkins said.
Coach Kris Knoblauch said that Edmonton has faced difficult situations before and will overcome this one, too.
"We've been through difficult situations before & it's just another one we'll overcome," Knoblauch said.
Both showed confidence as Edmonton prepares for the must-win Game 6 in Florida.
In Game 5, Brad Marchand scored two goals, while Sam Bennett and Sam Reinhart also netted. Eetu Luostarinen had a goal and an assist for the Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky made 19 saves in the Panthers' win.
For Edmonton, Connor McDavid scored his first goal of the series. Corey Perry also scored a goal late in the game. Despite their efforts, Edmonton were comprehensively beaten.
