Carbery, 43, thought he was doing a routine TV interview with Capitals play-by-play announcer Joe Beninati. However, what started as a discussion about his team’s success quickly turned into a heartwarming surprise.

Carbery's wife, Casey, was waiting backstage with her son, Hudson, and daughter, Vivian, and other family members to surprise him at the right time.

Beninati ended the segment by saying,

"I've been told there are a few special people who want to congratulate you."

Moments later, Spencer Carbery’s wife Casey, son Hudson, daughter Vivian and extended family entered the room.

“I had no idea,” Carbery said tearfully as he hugged his loved ones. “All corners of the continent… for them to come to D.C. and celebrate this moment with me, I’ll never forget that.”

Under his leadership, the team improved in nearly every area, including goals per game, penalty kill and comeback wins. Carbery credited everyone around him.

"I can tell when he is surprised." Carbery's dad said.
"I can't believe you my baby. I am so proud of you. Do you know that? I am so proud of you." Carbery's mom said.

Carbery received 464 points in the Jack Adams voting, finishing well ahead of Scott Arniel of the Jets (249) and Martin St. Louis of the Canadiens (66). Fans can watch the 2024 NHL Awards on June 12 at 6 p.m. ET on TNT and Sportsnet, before Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final.
