Johnny Gaudreau's untimely passing is still fresh in the minds of his fans and especially the city of Columbus, Ohio, who Johnny represented in the NHL via the Blue Jackets. His wife, Meredith, acknowledged the city's love for her late husband recently.
On Saturday during ESPN's College Gameday show for the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Indiana Hoosiers, a fan was seen holding a 'Johnny Hockey Forever' sign. This was Gaudreau's special nickname that he had picked up during his junior hockey career.
Meredith Gaudreau retweeted the picture on her X account, with a special three-word response. She wrote:
"Forever and ever ♥️"
Johnny and his brother Matthew's deaths came as a shock not just to the ice hockey community but to the entire sports world. The brothers were killed by a drunk person driving a truck in their home state of New Jersey in late August. The pair were cycling on the eve of their sister Katie's birthday.
Both brothers have been on the ice with a puck in front of them since their childhood. This year would have marked Johnny Gaudreau's 11th season in the NHL. He spent eight seasons with the Calgary Flames before making a move to Columbus. Matthew Gaudreau was a minor-league forward playing in the AHL.
Meredith Gaudreau's gratitude for tribute from US House of Representatives for Johnny and Matty
Last week, the US House of Representatives held a special session where they paid tribute to the Gaudreau brothers. Ohio's Republican Congressman, Mike Carey took the floor to pay his respects. He thanked the two for their contributions to the city of Columbus.
"Johnny and Matthew are beloved by their family, their community,” Carey said on the Congress floor. “The Columbus community will never forget Johnny and Matthew. And while their athletic talents were extraordinary, we can still learn from their example. We can emulate their strong work ethic, their love for their family, and their spirit. To all who loved them, may their memory be a blessing.”
In return, Meredith Gaudreau thanked the US House for the same. She took to X to pen down a two-word response to Carey's wholehearted words.
The fan holding the 'Johnny Hockey Forever' sign and the US House's recognition are two distinct tributes for two great hockey players whose lives ended in a tragic incident. Their lives will continue to be celebrated as the days go by.
