The post comes months after Johnny, widely known as “Johnny Hockey,” and his brother Matthew tragically died in a bike accident on August 29, 2024. The brothers were hit by a car in New Jersey while riding on County Route 551 North.

Police said the driver, Sean M. Higgins, was likely under the influence of alcohol and trying to pass another car. Higgins was charged with two counts of death by auto. Johnny and Matthew had returned home to be groomsmen at their sister’s wedding, set to take place two days later.

Johnny is survived by Meredith, their two children — daughter Noa, 2, and son Johnny Jr., 9 months, and a third child, whom Meredith revealed she was expecting during his memorial service.

Johnny played for the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets and was deeply loved by fans and family.

On Oct. 15, Meredith Gaudreau shared a heartfelt message after the Columbus Blue Jackets’ home opener. The game against the Florida Panthers honored her late husband Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew.

Both teams wore Johnny’s No. 13 during warmups. The Blue Jackets also displayed a tribute featuring a replica locker with his jerseys and fan memorial items. Meredith attended the game with their children, Noa and Johnny Jr.

Meredith thanked the Blue Jackets family for their support. She wrote that Nationwide Arena felt like a second home and a place where she and her daughter Noa felt close to Johnny.

"Thank you to our entire Columbus Blue Jackets family for such a beautiful night celebrating our favorite guy 💙. NWA was our second home as a family and a place I still feel close to John in. I could see in Noa’s eyes that she can feel it too," Meredith said via IG.

She also thanked fans for their tributes and ended her message by calling Johnny the best husband and father.

Meredith further thanked her “hockey sisters” for supporting a bracelet fundraiser in memory of Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew. The fundraiser raised over $20,000 for the Gaudreau Brothers Foundation.
