After the Edmonton Oilers’ 5-4 double-overtime loss to the Florida Panthers in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final, head coach Kris Knoblauch praised veteran forward Corey Perry.
Perry scored with 18 seconds left in regulation, tying the game and sending it to overtime. The 40-year-old also had three shots and two hits in the game.
"I know he made a lot of good plays, and he kept it off in the in the third period, about 30 seconds left, or whatever it was to score there," Knoblauch said postgame. "But in the third period, he had a lot of opportunities partial Breakaway, lone it further net a couple times.
"Yeah, determination, finding a way to find the puck and then obviously putting it in the net. He's got a skill for that, that's definitely what we're thinking about when we added him last year in the playoffs, or for last year for the run in the playoffs... He is as good as anybody in finding ways to score," he added.
(from 2:48 mark onwards)
Corey Perry now has eight goals, 12 points, and 30 hits in 18 playoff games this year. He is currently on a four-game point streak.
This is Perry’s sixth Stanley Cup Final appearance. He last won the Cup with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007. He has reached the final with Dallas, Montreal, Tampa Bay, and Edmonton.
Evander Kane, Evan Bouchard and Leon Draisaitl also scored for the Oilers, while Connor McDavid had three assists. Edmonton gave up leads of 2-1 and 3-2 during the game. Brad Marchand scored twice for Florida, including the winning goal in double overtime.
Corey Perry is not thinking about retirement and plans to play next season
Corey Perry signed a one-year deal with the Oilers last summer. He scored 30 points in 81 regular-season games. Earlier this week, when asked about retirement, he said he doesn’t think about it.
"It’s just not in me to think about it (retirement); there are other things that I love doing," Perry said via NHL.com. "I love playing, I love being around the room. I don’t think that’s going to come to my head anytime soon."
Perry's 7-year-old son Griffin joined him at media day. He said Griffin knows every player and watches highlights daily:
"This is why I’m still playing, to have him have an opportunity to touch the Stanley Cup. It’s something that I want to give him."
With the series tied 1-1, Corey Perry’s experience could be key for the Oilers moving forward.
Game 3 is set for Monday at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida.
