In sports, championships reign supreme — and in hockey, it's all about the Stanley Cup. A player who doesn't win a championship, no matter how good they are, is forever labeled for not being a champion. Charles Barkley, Allen Iverson, Tony Gwynn, Barry Sanders and Barry Bonds are just a few examples from other sports.
One NHL account on X, formerly Twitter, posed the question on Sept. 2: Who is the best hockey player who never got to lift the Stanley Cup? There are many good options, and more players will eventually be on this list once they retire. Hockey fans had their say.
"It's crazy Iginla outscored everyone on this list except for Dionne while playing during the dead puck era. Sometimes I forget how dominant Iginla was," one said.
"Keith Tkachuk. He got to lift it as a father and as a member of organization. But never as a player," another added.
"All great players, but Dionne was special," one said.
"Joe Thornton, Henrik Lundqvist, Sedin Twins not saying they're the best but they should all be under consideration," another fan stated.
Marcel Dionne got a lot of love from NHL fans. The former Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers star had an illustrious career from 1971 to 1989, but he never won the Stanley Cup.
Stanley Cup Odds for 2024-25
Right now, there are a lot of active players who are trying to avoid ending up on the above list. Connor McDavid is one, as the Edmonton Oilers fell short of winning the Stanley Cup Final by one goal in Game 7 last season after a historic comeback.
A new season, which starts in October, is a new chance to get off the inauspicious list. Here's who has the best odds to do that via FanDuel:
- Edmonton Oilers, +850
- Florida Panthers, +1000
- New Jersey Devils, +1100
- Colorado Avalanche, +1100
- Dallas Stars, +1100
- New York Rangers, +1100
The odds suggest a rematch and another chance for McDavid could be in the cards next year.
