The Edmonton Oilers' Evander Kane found himself in hot water once again during Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers on Monday. Just minutes after receiving a cross-checking penalty against Gustav Forsling, Kane received another penalty for high-sticking, much to the dismay of NHL Twitter.
The incident occurred at the 7:54 mark of the first period. Panthers forward Brad Marchand was carrying the puck behind Florida's net. Evander Kane, while trying to regain possession, caught Marchand with a high stick, resulting in the penalty call.
Fans were quick to weigh in on the situation on social media, with one fan commenting,
"Marchand sold that like a used car salesman."
Another fan wrote,
"I’m not sure why, they were both clear penalties. Maybe he needs to be a bit smarter."
Here are some fan reactions:
"Mcully is the worst ref in the NHL why is he reffing this series again?" one fan wrote.
"Watch Marchand's hand hit Kane's stick into his own face. I'd be furious, too. His 1st penalty was the softest "crosscheck" call I've ever seen - he pushed him" another fan wrote.
"If Kane's gonna spend the night in the box I wish he'd just give Bobrovsky the ol Sam Bennet and make it worthwhile." a user commented.
"Throw all the Oilers in the box except McDavid, and the Oilers will still win." another user wrote.
At the end of the first period, the Panthers currently lead 2-0 against the Oilers. Brad Marchand and Carter Verhaeghe scored for the Panthers.
Brad Marchand's "advice" to Oilers
Brad Marchand had a clear message for the Oilers after the Panthers scored on a power play during Edmonton’s fourth penalty of the opening period. Skating past their bench, Marchand tapped his helmet and seemed to urge them to think smarter.
Edmonton’s discipline was a problem early — they took three penalties in the offensive zone and were also caught with seven skaters on the ice for a too-many-men infraction.
Later in the second period, Connor McDavid was rocked by a heavy hit from Panthers’ defenseman Aaron Ekblad as he carried from the neutral zone. McDavid crashed to the ice. He then headed straight to the Oilers’ locker room following the collision but returned to the bench not long after.
