Fans reacted as the Edmonton Oilers won their first game of the season, beating the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 in overtime on Tuesday. Leon Draisaitl scored the winning goal after a play involving Connor McDavid, but the win was controversial. Many fans were angry about a no-penalty call on McDavid that they thought should have been a penalty.

In the final moments, McDavid had a chance to score but was stopped on a breakaway. He still assisted Draisaitl, who scored the overtime goal. The game marked McDavid's 301st career multi-point game, going past Mark Messier for the second-most in Oilers history. Despite the win, fans were upset about the officiating.

Flyers fans were especially unhappy, claiming thaat McDavid should have been penalized for tripping defenseman Travis Sanheim near the Edmonton Oilers' goal. Sportsnet posted on X (formerly Twitter) about the game:

"MCDAVID TO DRAISAITL IN OVERTIME ... YOU KNOW THE REST! 🚨 The Edmonton Oilers pick up their first win of the season on Leon Draisaitl's @SUBWAYCanada OT winner."

NHL fans took to X to express their thoughts on the game:

"Nice trip by mcdavid lol," a fan tweeted.

Connor McDavid explains Edmonton Oilers' difficult start to the season

The Edmonton Oilers are struggling this season, despite the overtime win against the Flyers. Earlier, they lost three consecutive games to start the season, with the latest loss coming against Calgary, a 4-1 result.

Before the Flyers win, they were 0-3-0. It was the first time since Connor McDavid's rookie year in 2015 that the Oilers had lost their first three games in regulation, getting outscored 15-3.

“I’m sure there’s lots of ways to explain it,” McDavid said after loss to Calgary (via sportsnet..com). “Ultimately, it hasn’t been good enough."

The top line of McDavid, Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins didn't perform well in the first three games. But forward Leon Draisaitl scored his second goal of the season and registered his first two-point game.
