The Edmonton Oilers lost their composure in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

It was an extremely frustrating affair, which ended in a 6-1 drubbing courtesy of the Florida Panthers. The Oilers went from potentially taking a 2-0 series lead in overtime of Game 2 to being down 2-1 heading into a borderline must-win Game 4.

Things boiled over during the third period on Monday night, as Edmonton took a plethora of undisciplined penalties while the score got out of hand.

Former NHL legend Mark Messier appeared on the Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday and gave his honest opinion on the team's lack of discipline. Pat McAfee shared the clip on X (formerly Twitter).

"I just don't see the benefit of it. To be honest with you, I think that the Oilers want to play tough. They should be playing tough when the game is still in the balance from the opening face-off. But the fact is that both teams have to be more disciplined. I thought both teams actually took way too many penalties, needless penalties— careless penalties, undisciplined penalties— and that should have played well into the Oilers' hands, but it didn't," Messier said.
"Last night, they took too many of their own. If they're going to win this series, they have to be on the top side of the specialty teams, and right now they're not. They weren't particularly good on the power play last night, the penalty killings struggled, and if it continues that way, they are going to be in tough in this series," Messier added.

Edmonton finished with a whopping 85 minutes in penalties throughout the blowout Game 3 loss.

Oilers HC Kris Knoblauch wasn't as worried about all of the penalties

While many on the outside were critical of how Edmonton handled the end of the game on Monday night, their head coach didn't seem to have any issues with it.

Kris Knoblauch was asked about his team losing their cool as Florida was in control on the scoreboard. Panthers reporter David Dwork shared Knoblauch's comments following the loss on X.

"The game was out of hand. I don’t think we would’ve acted like that if it were a one-goal game. Boys will be boys," Knoblauch said.

The Oilers will need to regroup over the next two days and be ready for a critical Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Panthers on Thursday night in Florida. The puck drops at 8 p.m. EDT at Amerant Bank Arena.
