The Edmonton Oilers have been left with a serious hole in their defensive arsenal after losing Cody Ceci, Dylan Holloway and Phillip Broberg in a few days. After trading Ceci to the San Jose Sharks, they declined to meet the St. Louis Blues’ offer sheet to Broberg and Holloway.Having let go of Vincent Desharnais in free agency earlier in the offseason, the Oilers are four men short on their defensive roster. As the team is on the lookout for reinforcements in the market, NHL Insider Frank Seravalli identified three possible options who could be on the Oilers’ radar.“UFA Update: #Oilers are perusing the market for right-shot D, including Justin Schultz, Tyson Barrie and Kevin Shattenkirk, among others,” Seravalli tweeted.Former Oilers D-man Justin Schultz, who last played for the Seattle Kraken, is among the free agents Seravalli mentioned in his report. Kevin Shattenkirk and ex-Oiler Tyson Barrie are two other options, according to the Insider.Seravalli wasn’t the only one to link Tyson Barrie with the Oilers. TSN’s Dustin Nielson had previously reported that the Oilers had reached out to Barrie.“Oilers are keeping all their options open on PTOs but they’ve already had conversations with Tyson Barrie,” Nielsen tweeted on Thursday.Fans opine on possible targets for Edmonton Oilers’ blue lineSince the offer sheet fiasco that saw the Oilers lose Holloway and Broberg to the Blues, fans have been concerned over possible replacements the team needs to bring in this offseason. Oilers faithful were quick to react to Frank Seravalli’s tweet and shared their opinions.Following are some fan reactions on X/Twitter:“Tyson Barrie and Nurse together is gonna be hilarious hahaha oilers are cooked,” one said.“Oilers collecting RD like odd socks from the dryer! How many 6th/7th RD make one Top 4 RD? Stecher, Carrick, Brown, Kemp, Emberson, Barrie, Schultz or Shattenkirk? Couldn’t have just had Nurse+Bouchard, Broberg+Ekholm or Nurse+Ekholm, Broberg+Bouchard. Sodumb,” opined one user.Fans weren’t essentially happy with the names Seravalli reported. They believe the team needs to look for better players to fill the hole in its blue line“Always looking to add even more to an Offensive team… even on back end! They need an actual D to help goalie and PK,” quipped one fan.“Would have to think the Dman they're targeting has to be over 35 to fit within their locker room culture,” tweeted another user. For now, the Oilers’ hunt for profiles to suit their D-man requirements continues. Newly appointed general manager Stan Bowman has some tough decisions to make this offseason.
