Nick Robertson re-signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs on a one-year, $875,000 contract Tuesday after being a restricted free agent. The 23-year-old forward initially requested a trade from the Maple Leafs, adding intrigue to his current situation.
However, despite the new deal, NHL insider Frank Seravalli has speculated that the Toronto Maple Leafs may still look to trade the young forward before the season starts.
On his X post, Seravalli suggested:
"Despite new contract, belief is Nick Robertson is still more likely to be traded than open the season with the #Leafs."
He explained that even though Robertson signed a new contract, it makes him easier to trade as an asset under contract rather than as a restricted free agent.
"There is still solid interest in Robertson. And it's always easier to trade an asset under contract as opposed to an RFA, which helped him sign."
With Tyler Bertuzzi's departure, it looked like Robertson would have a chance to take on a bigger role and potentially earn the second-line left wing spot and time on the second power play unit.
However, it seems that the Toronto Maple Leafs are considering trading him instead of giving him a chance in Toronto.
Fans buzz over Frank Seravalli's take on potential Nick Robertson trade out of Toronto Maple Leafs
Frank Seravalli's take has sparked intense debate among the Leafs faithful, with opinions sharply divided.
Some see logic in Seravalli's analysis, pointing to the team's depth at left wing and Robertson's potential misfit on the fourth line. However, skeptics have questioned the credibility of the trade speculation.
One fan agreed with the Seravalli's take:
"Makes sense, if they’re signing Pacioretty then Robertson is 4th on the LW depth chart. He’s not a fit on the 4th line, let alone the amount of sulking he’d be doing."
Another wrote:
"Not buying this at all."
Here are some more fan reactions:
"If buddy doesn’t wanna be there, best to move on for both player and org," one fan commented.
"Frank is usually wrong, so not in the least convinced this will happen. I believe Frank also had Marner gone or less than 5% chance of him srarting the season with the Leafs," another fan wrote.
"What a waste of a good asset by the Leafs" a user wrote.
"You said the same about Marner. You're bad at your job eh?" another user commented.
Last season, Robertson scoreed 14 goals and 27 points in 56 NHL games.
