The Toronto Maple Leafs have ended their contract stalemate with RFA forward Nick Robertson. According to reports, Robertson has signed a one-year deal to re-sign with the Maple Leafs.Robertson had reportedly told the Leafs he had no plans to re-sign with them and requested a trade. The former second-round pick was apparently frustrated with his role, but he decided to take back his trade request and signed a one-year, $875,000 deal on Tuesday. As NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported, Toronto has re-signed Robertson to a one-year deal with $875k. It is a bit of a surprise, as he had held firm that he wanted out of Toronto due to the lack of playing time he has gotten with the team.Since being selected in the second round of the 2019 NHL draft, he has skated in 87 games recording 17 goals and 17 assists for 34 points. Although he has dealt with injuries at times, he also has been a scratch and hasn't been given the playing time he wanted.Maple Leafs GM envisions a big role for Nick RobertsonAfter Nick Robertson's trade request went public, Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving said he envisioned a big role for Robertson."I have certainly known that there was some frustration with Nick, but we look at Nick as an excellent player," Treliving said, via TSN. "There is great opportunity for Nick here. We need him to be a good player for us. I am not going to get into any speculation or public back-and-forth. We will just leave it at that and continue to move forward."Since Tyler Bertuzzi left in free agency, Toronto has a big hole in the second-line left-wing spot, which Nick Robertson could take. The plan for Robertson is to become the second-line left winger and also chip in with power play time as well as a depth scorer for the Maple Leafs.Toronto opens its 2024-25 NHL season on Oct. 9 against the Montreal Canadiens.
