Leon Draisaitl is staying calm after the Edmonton Oilers' 5-4 double-overtime loss to the Florida Panthers in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup finals. He scored a power-play goal and added an assist in the game.
Despite the overtime loss, Draisaitl is not stressed about it. Speaking to the media after the game on Friday, he said close games are expected at this time of year.
"This time of year, you have to move on," Draisaitl said. "There's no time to dwell on it. It stings right now, but we have to move forward."
Draisaitl now has a point in eight straight games. This was also his fourth straight multi-point performance. He has 10 goals and 19 assists in 18 playoff games this year.
Apart from Draisaitl, Evan Bouchard, Evander Kane and Corey Perry each scored once. McDavid was also playing exceptionally and had three assists, including Perry's goal, which tied the game 4-4 with less than half a minute left. Despite scoring late to force overtime, Edmonton couldn’t stop Brad Marchand’s second goal of the game.
"Yeah, I mean, obviously we gotta look on the other side and to break away. It squeaks through." Draisaitl said about Brad Marchand’s overtime winner.
Draisaitl added that the Oilers will regroup and focus on Game 3. He admitted the second period was tough, saying they lost energy and puck battles.
"We just lost our legs a little bit," Draisaitl said. "We weren't as quick to recover pucks, and they're going to have their push, of course. It's something we need to look at."
The Panthers were outshot 42-46 by the Oilers but dominated on the faceoffs with a 54.3% win percentage. The Oilers had six power-play opportunities but they capitalized on only one of them.
The series now moves to Florida tied 1-1.
Leon Draisaitl appreciated Oilers captain Connor McDavid's assist on a power-play goal
Leon Draisaitl praised Connor McDavid for his assist on the power-play goal. McDavid skated past Barkov, then moved around Aaron Ekblad, and passed the puck across the slot. Draisaitl scored with a one-timer from the right circle.
Draisaitl said only McDavid could make that play.
"There's one player in the world that can make that [play]," Draisaitl said, via NHL.com.
The goal gave Edmonton a 3-2 lead in the first period, but they lost the lead and eventually lost the game in overtime. Now, they will have to focus on more strategic offense, winning faceoffs, and keeping their lead.
