Thatcher Demko played his last game on April 21 against the Nashville Predators in their first game of the 2024 NHL Playoffs. Earlier, before their Game 6 matchup against the Oilers, the Canucks coach had mentioned that Demko had been taking shots and making good progress.

However, now heading into Game 7, Tocchet has made it clear that there was no chance the goalie would return during the second round, despite the series extending to seven games.

Fans were quick to react to the news and Canucks faithful were not pleased to hear it. Some believed the Oilers would advance easily in Demko’s absence.

“Oilers free advance lol.”

“Oilers in 7 then,” wrote another user.
“Damn that's too bad,” commented one fan.

Some fans suggested that Tocchet might intentionally be withholding the full truth about Demko's readiness to play. They believed the coach could be downplaying the possibility of Demko's return as a strategic move to keep opponents guessing.

“ITS MISDIRECTION!”

“Like he's going to tell you! You new?” wrote another fan.

A few fans urged the rest of the team to step up in their star goaltender’s absence, while others expressed hopes for Thatcher Demko’s full recovery during the off-season.

“Keep those players accountable. No Demko to save you. Find what you need in that dressing room boys!” commented one fan.

“Hope he gets surgery or whatever he needs this off-season. This needs to be addressed for the player and the team,” wrote another fan.

Rick Tocchet’s full update on Thatcher Demko’s condition

After the Vancouver Canucks’ 5-1 loss in Game 6 at Rogers Arena, head coach Rick Tocchet opened up about Thatcher Demko’s condition. He ruled out the possibility of having his first-choice goalie take the net on Monday.

Prior to the game, he had suggested something similar, but perhaps there was a touch of optimism in his previous comments.

“That would be a stretch. I’m not trying to hide anything. He has been taking shots and doing a lot of good things,” the coach had said before Game 6.

In the post-game presser, Tocchet also commented on goaltender Arthur Silov’s performance on the night. Silov conceded five goals against the Oilers on Saturday.

“He was fine, we have a lot of confidence in Arty,” Rick Tocchet said.

Now the Vancouver Canucks will play the Oilers at Rogers Area on Monday in a series-deciding showdown to advance into the Western Conference Finals.
