The Edmonton Oilers are yet to sign restricted free agents Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway. On top of that, according to PuckPedia, they are $354,000 over the salary cap. As the offseason progresses, the situation remains difficult for the team.
On Friday’s edition of his show OilersNow on 630 CHED, Edmonton's color commentator Bob Stauffer expressed doubt about quick agreements with Broberg and Holloway.
“I don’t see anything imminent out there, at this time, regarding Philip Broberg, and for that matter, Dylan Holloway,” Stauffer said.
Stauffer suggested that a two-year deal in the low $1-million range would be ideal for the Oilers.
"I think from an Edmonton perspective, ideally you try to get those players done at two years, maybe in the low $1’s," Stauffer added.
"...that might make sense, particularly for a guy like Dylan Holloway. I see these maybe getting done at some point during August. Now, could there be an offer sheet? We don’t see a lot of offer sheets."
Stauffer speculated these deals might not happen until August.
“I know there’s some people down in Calgary saying, ‘Well, why don’t we go and offer sheet Philip Broberg?’ We’ll see what happens here. One thing we’ve seen is the Oilers have been very creative in cap space when they need to. We’ll have to see on that front.”
Securing both Broberg and Holloway at affordable rates is crucial for Edmonton given their tight cap situation. The team has limited options to become cap-compliant by the start of the season.
Oilers' Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway's playoff performances
Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway are promising young players. Broberg, a defenseman, has shown potential in his limited NHL appearances. He played 10 playoff games in Oiler's Stanley Cup Final run and scored 3 points, including 2 goals with a plus-minus of 8.
Holloway, a forward, is highly regarded for his skill and versatility. He played 25 playoff games and scored 5 goals and 2 assists for 7 points. Ensuring their contracts are both team-friendly and fair to the players is a priority for Oiler’s management.
As the offseason continues, analysts will watch closely to see how Edmonton manages these negotiations and their cap space.
