The Edmonton Oilers came close to winning the Stanley Cup this past season. But ultimately fell short as they suffered a devastating 2-1 loss to the Florida Panthers in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.

The What Chaos! X account posted video footage from inside the Oilers' locker room after the game, which captured the sheer heartbreak and disappointment on the players' faces.

As the Panthers loudly celebrated their championship victory nearby, the Oilers were in the dressing room, just sitting there unable to face their teammates. Others stared blankly ahead, tears welling in their eyes.

Fans on social media expressed empathy for the team's anguish. Many commented that the clip was difficult to watch, with one fan writing,

"only one goal and it was game 7.. pain was extra."

Another fan noted,

"They did their best. Sometimes we can try our hardest in life, but the results aren't in our control. They should still be proud of their effort."

A couple of fan reactions noted just how close the Edmonton Oilers came.

"Oooof. So close!!! Sorry guys. Better luck in another 20ish years," a user wrote, referring to the fact that the Oilers made their first Stanley Cup appearance in 18 years.
"So close yet so far away." another fan wrote.

Meanwhile, other fans were mixed on whether the scenes in the locker room were great or awful.

"Dude I’m a Canucks fan and even I think this sucks…." one fan wrote on X.
"This is the best thing I’ve ever seen in my life" another fan wrote.

Connor McDavid's comments after the Edmonton Oilers' Game 7 loss to the Panthers

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid was clearly disappointed after the loss but spoke positively about his team's resilience and character throughout the season.

"Just the resilience of the group. We went through a lot of ups and downs and came that close," Connor McDavid said to NHL.com. "I'm really proud, proud of the way we fought all year. We were behind the 8-ball almost immediately and fought an uphill climb for months and months and months and it [stinks]."

The Panthers proved to be too strong in the end, but McDavid emphasized the character his team showed.

"It goes back to the character of the group that we showed all year long," McDavid said. "We showed all year long that we could fight back, even in the most dire situations. It's obviously tough to be down three and it's tough to win four in a row against a team like that, but we were right there."

Though disappointed, McDavid expressed pride in the Edmonton Oilers' effort and resilience throughout the season.
