Who could have ever predicted that Brad Marchand would be the hero throughout the Florida Panthers' 2025 Stanley Cup Playoff run?
It turns out that said unimaginable scenario has become a reality, as the Panthers are reaping the rewards of pulling off the last-minute trade deadline deal to acquire the longtime Boston Bruin.
Marchand has appeared rejuvenated in Florida, and who knows where the team would be without him? He ranks second on the Panthers in playoff point scoring and came up with the biggest goal of their season thus far on Friday.
Down 1-0 in the Stanley Cup Finals against the Edmonton Oilers had Florida in almost must-win territory for Game 2. They put forth a strong performance but once again saw the lead slip away late in the third period. For the second straight game, they were headed to overtime, in desperate need of a hero to even the series.
Of course, Brad Marchand was the one to come through in the clutch, tallying his second breakaway goal of the night halfway into double overtime. Marchand spoke to the TNT panel after the win and was asked about the move he made on the game-winning goal. Spittin' Chiclets shared his response on X.
"You know, to be honest, I blacked out," Marchand said. "I don't even know where it went. ... But, yeah, it's just obviously a fortuitous bounce, and we'll take it."
Marchand is now up to 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists) in 19 games thus far in the 2025 postseason.
Brad Marchand made history in Game 2
While Brad Marchand is only focused on getting the win for his Florida Panthers, the 37-year-old made some history on an individual level.
Sportsnet Stats shared the feat that Marchand is the first to have ever achieved on X.
"Panthers Brad Marchand is the only player in history to score a shorthanded goal, followed by an overtime goal in a #StanleyCup Final game," Sportsnet Stats wrote.
It was certainly a night that Brad Marchand won't soon forget, and he echoed that during a postgame interview with Gene Principe of Sportsnet, saying, "These are memories you have for the rest of your life."
Marchand and the Panthers now head back home for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Oilers on Monday in Florida. The puck drops at 8 p.m. EST at Amerant Bank Arena.
