Former NHL player turned analyst Ryan Whitney had an enthusiastic reaction to Corey Perry's game-tying goal for the Edmonton Oilers with just 17 seconds left in regulation during Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Florida Panthers.
The Oilers jumped out with three goals in the first period after Evander Kane, Evan Bouchard and Leon Draisaitl scored. The Panthers answered back with two goals in the opening frame and added two more in the second. Sam Bennett, Seth Jones, Dmitry Kulikov and Brad Marchand found the back of the net.
At the end of the third period with Florida leading 4-3, Jake Walkman shot the puck from center ice and Florida goalie Sergei Bobrovsky made the initial save, but Corey Perry was there to bang home the rebound with 17 seconds on the clock.
Whitney, now an analyst for ESPN, could not contain his excitement.
"The worm!!!! This man is 40 years old," he said in a post on X/Twitter, referring to Perry's clutch goal to send the game to OT.
Whitney added:
"Unbelievable. This team. Are you kidding me. This is ridiculous. Best two games to start a cup final ever???"
This was the second game of the series to go to overtime. The Oilers won Game 1 against the Panthers 4-3.
Whitney’s fired-up reaction captured exactly how Oilers fans felt — pure excitement and disbelief after Corey Perry’s clutch goal kept Game 2 alive.
