He also recalled meeting Bryson DeChambeau, the reigning champion at the tournament, in 2021 at Capital One's The Match golf challenge in Montana.

DeChambeau left a lasting impression on the Pittsburgh Penguins star even before he really burst onto the scene in subsequent years. Crosby said in an interview published Friday, via NHL:

"Just seeing him drive a golf ball was impressive enough, but I met him quick, and I really enjoyed the opportunity to see what those guys do close up. He’s a great guy, and he’s got a huge following with that YouTube stuff that he does now.

"It’s pretty neat that he’s doing that. Gives fans a great look at how he practices and just his personality and all that stuff. It’s pretty cool.”

DeChambeau, like many players, had a rough opening round on Thursday at the US Open, shooting three over and placing just barely inside the top 50.

Sidney Crosby remembers hilarious story from 2016 US Open

At the US Open in 2016, Sidney Crosby and some of his teammates were on the green taking some practice putts. They were celebrating their Stanley Cup Final win and had some beer, which they spilled.

Crosby recalled it with a grin, via NHL:

“I remember we were rolling putts at the putting green, and someone kicked a beer over and spilled beer on the putting green. I was like, we should not be here doing this, you know? I remember just being mortified that this is the U.S. Open and guys are spilling beers on the practice green.”

That was during a rain delay, but once it was over, the golfers had Crosby awestruck:

“[A group] got a warning for pace of play, which is really uncommon. But I think they were trying to get a lot of people in because of the rain delay. I've never seen professional golfers play that quick. So, whatever they were told, they took it serious. It was a major, so to see someone just tee it up, no practice swings, was so rare.”

Crosby is known as an avid golfer and plays from time to time when he's not on a hockey ice rink.
