Fans were left disappointed after the Edmonton Oilers fell 5-4 to the Florida Panthers in a heartbreaking double-overtime loss in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final on Friday night.
Panthers forward Brad Marchand scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway 8:04 into the second overtime period to even the series at 1-1.
Oilers fans expressed their disappointment after the tough loss. Many felt that goaltender Stuart Skinner should have stopped Marchand's game-winner, with one fan tweeting
"Skinner gotta stop that last goal."
Another wrote:
"Skinner goes from making insane saves to letting in that weak ass goal..."
Here are some more fan reactions:
"I’m only disappointed that they left skinner defenceless whole team was on panthers side but 0 support to stop them from scoring on skinner," one wrote.
"Shit slipped under him I don’t know wtf happened," another wrote.
"I’m not blaming Skinner at all, but how come he doesn’t think to put that fat blade down in front of the gap between his pads ?," one commented.
"Marchand literally had one play with 29 forcing him to go backhand. That’s one he needed to stop. Bob outplayed him tonight" another wrote.
The Oilers got goals from Evander Kane, Evan Bouchard, Corey Perry and Leon Draisaitl, but they weren't enough to overcome the Panthers, for whom Sam Bennett, Seth Jones, Dmitry Kulikov and Marchand (twice) provided the goals.
Stuart Skinner made 38 saves, while Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 42 shots in the win. The series now shifts to Florida, tied 1-1. Game 3 is on Monday night at FLA Live Arena.
