Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers were punched in the mouth by the Florida Panthers on Monday night.
Their 6-1 Game 3 loss was ugly from start to finish, as the Oilers now find themselves in a 2-1 series deficit, forcing an almost must-win Game 4 on Thursday night.
Edmonton began to display its frustration as the night went on, finishing with an absurd 85 penalty minutes in the game. Despite all that went wrong on Monday night in Florida, ESPN hockey analyst PK Subban remains confident that Connor McDavid will get the Oilers back into the series.
However, fellow ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith chimed in with his perspective on the situation, urging McDavid to step up, particularly when it comes to goal scoring. First Take shared the video of their back-and-forth on X (formerly Twitter).
"Let me tell you why. I have a problem with what you're saying. First of all, Edmonton got blown out. We understand. They got romped. We get that part. Conor McDavid, 13 shots, no goals, zero, nothing in the Stanley Cup. And, oh, by the way, this is a three-time league MVP. No championship. Maybe the greatest that has never won," Smith said.
"These are the kind of things you were talking about with him from last year. Okay, so here we are again, same opponent, same situation, same problem. Okay. When do you get to hold a superstar accountable, if not under these conditions?" Smith added.
McDavid leads the playoffs in point scoring with 31 points (six goals, 25 assists) in 19 games played thus far.
Connor McDavid believes Edmonton's best is yet to come
While Game 3 was a disheartening loss for the Oilers, their captain isn't too worried just yet, knowing the team has much more to give.
Sportsnet shared some of McDavid's postgame comments on X.
"I don't think our best has shown up all series long, but it's coming," McDavid said.
Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers will certainly need their best in Game 4 to avoid heading home in a 3-1 series deficit and their season on the line.
Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Oilers and Panthers will go down on Thursday night in Florida. The puck drops at 8 p.m. EDT at Amerant Bank Arena.
