Connor McDavid, the Oilers' superstar captain, exited early with a lower-body injury, which contributed to the lopsided defeat.

"It’ll be really embarrassing for y’all if I have to come down there and show y’all how to play hockey. You can do this, boys."

Here are some more fan reactions:

"Team lost too much youth and speed. Old slow team now that doesnt play with any heart most games. Huge steps back this season so far from Nuge, Hyman and S.Skinner too. Arvidsson not doing much. Bouchard looks terrible. Special teams are a disaster," one fan wrote on X.

"move on. That’s all we can do. One bad game doesn’t mean it’s all over. I’m not even mad for once. Skinners gotta figure it out so let him rest for a while," another fan wrote.
"Do the boys realize it's not preseason anymore? The games actually matter now," a user commented.

"Maybe buying out another goalie will help," another user wrote.

Sean Monahan (two goals), Cole Sillinger, Adam Fantilli, Mathieu Olivier and Mikael Pyyhtia scored for the Blue Jackets, while Mattias Ekholm netted the lone goal for the Oilers.

Elvis Merzlikins stopped 31 shots for Columbus, while Stuart Skinner made 19 saves for the Edmonton Oilers.

Edmonton Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch reflects on loss to Columbus

Edmonton Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch was disappointed with his team's performance in the heavy defeat to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Knoblauch felt that the team was ready to compete, but an early penalty kill goal seemed to take the wind out of their sails. He said:

"We thought we were ready to go and, you know, we gave up a early penalty kill goal starts with, you know, guy losses an edge, takes out the goalie and they called penalty.

"And, yeah, and then, they get an early one on us on the penalty kill and I think it was a little deflating for out team. "

He acknowledged that the mistakes Edmonton made ended up in the back of the net but didn't place the blame solely on goalie Stuart Skinner.

"And, yeah, it just seemed like the mistakes that we made went in the net and not that I'm blaming Stuy (Stuart Skinner) because there wasn't much opportunity to save those."

The coach added that Columbus capitalized on the Oilers' errors, while Edmonton failed to do the same on the other end. Next, the Edmonton Oilers face the Nashville Predators on Thursday at Bridgestone Arena.
