Salt Lake City to host 2034 Winter Olympics with compact layout and existing venues

Salt Lake City plans a very compact layout for the 2034 Games. All venues are within an hour's drive of the athletes' village at the University of Utah. The design uses existing infrastructure, so no new permanent buildings are needed.

After the IOC revealed that Salt Lake City would host the next Olympics, the crowd waiting for the news in Paris cheered in excitement.

Chairman of the IOC's Future Host Commission, Karl Stoss, said on Wednesday morning, via abcnews:

“Enthusiasm for the Games was always our feeling, on the first minute to the last minute, in every interaction we had, both at the venues and in our meetings with athletes, sports leaders, politicians and the private sector."

Salt Lake City had the sole rights for the 2034 Games after they got the exclusive negotiating rights last year. Fewer cities want to host such huge events due to climate change and high costs, which helped Utah.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox was crucial in securing the bid, aiming to make Utah North America's winter sports capital. The bid nearly faced a delay due to a clause requiring local officials to cooperate with U.S. leaders on a federal doping investigation involving Chinese swimmers. Governor Cox accepted this condition, helping ensure the Winter Olympics bid’s success.
