The Colorado Avalanche’s signing of veteran defenseman Oliver Kylington to a one-year, $1.05 million contract has sparked a flurry of excitement among NHL fans.
Kylington missed the 2022-23 season and first half of 2023-24 due to personal reasons before rejoining the Calgary Flames, tallying 3 goals and 5 assists in 33 games.
The signing excited Avalanche fans, who expressed their approval. One fan tweeted,
"Very nice deal for Colorado here," praising the team for getting Kylington on an affordable short-term contract.
Another fan predicted,
"Kylington linsanity run incoming".
Here are some fan reactions:
"Wow, this is good. Underrated D-man. Well done as usual CMac." one fan wrote on X.
"That’s a little bit of a stab to the heart after all the Flames organization did for him….." another fan wrote.
"Yayy I'm glad someone got him. He's such a good guy, loved having him on the Flames." a user worte.
"Dude is 2-ply, couldn't handle Sutter so he went on a sabbatical. Worse than Gaudreau or Tkachuk combined imo." another user wrote.
Kylington was drafted 60th overall by the Calgary Flames in 2015. The Swedish defenseman put up solid numbers in his time in Calgary, recording 17 goals and 38 assists in 201 games over six seasons.
The Colorado Avalanche's packed defense line
With the signing of Oliver Kylington, the Avs have added yet another formidable defenseman to their already stacked roster. Kylington joins Calvin de Haan and Erik Brannstrom as the third depth defenseman acquired this summer.
The core of the Avalanche's defense remains rock-solid with Devon Toews, Cale Makar, Sam Girard, and Josh Manson virtually guaranteed spots. Add to this mix the promising Sam Malinski, who at 26 now requires waivers to be sent down to the AHL.
Having eight NHL-caliber defensemen might present a unique challenge for the Avalanche. Kylington, de Haan, and Brannstrom all come with manageable price tags that could potentially be buried in the AHL without impacting the cap – assuming they clear waivers.
Colorado may need to explore the trade market and move a defenseman before training camp. Otherwise, there will be fierce competition in camp with so many qualified players vying for the final three spots.
