Alexander Ovechkin, the captain of the Washington Capitals, was honored during a pre-game ceremony on March 21 at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The ceremony was held to celebrate Ovechkin's recent achievement of surpassing Gordie Howe to become the second-highest scorer in NHL history with 802 career goals.

During the ceremony, Ovechkin was joined on the ice by his family members, including his wife, Nastya, their children Sergei and Ilya, his mother, Tatyana and his brother Mikhail. Also present were Ted Leonsis, the chairman and CEO of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, Capitals president Dick Patrick, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly and Mark Howe.

Ovechkin was presented with a special gift from the organization, the National Hockey League, the National Hockey League Players' Association, and his teammates. The Capitals players wore #8 on their jerseys for the warmups, which were later signed and auctioned off by the Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation.

Alexander Ovechkin, who was mic'd up for the ceremony and the game, could be seen continuously motivating his teammates during the night. He hugged his teammates, family members and eminent guests who congratulated him.

All fans in attendance received an Ovechkin goal counter bobblehead, and a special augmented reality experience was also created to commemorate Ovechkin's achievement. The AR experience, called "AR Ovi," allowed fans to bring Ovechkin into their world and featured a special congratulations message.

With his 802nd career goal scored on Dec. 23, he surpassed Gordie Howe to claim second spot on the NHL's all-time goals list, trailing only Wayne Gretzky. Ovechkin's remarkable season has also seen him on track to record his 10th career 50-goal season, surpassing Gretzky and Bossy for the most in NHL history.

He could surpass Gretzky for the most 40-goal seasons in NHL history, too. With numerous records already to his name, Alexander Ovechkin continues to cement his legacy as one of the greatest players in NHL history. Ovechkin is the only player in NHL history to win a Stanley Cup, a Conn Smythe, a Calder, an Art Ross, a Hart, a Ted Lindsay and a Maurice Richard Trophy.
