Lane Hutson was the NHL's Rookie of the Year, playing more than well enough to earn the Calder Trophy as the top newcomer in the sport. This comes three years after his selection in the second round (62nd overall).
The young player, who infamously doesn't love surprises, was surprised by his family giving him the Calder Trophy to honor his impressive rookie season. Everyone had to keep the knowledge of his award win, which Hutson didn't have, quiet.
His family had to share the secret amongst one another, but they couldn't tell the Montreal Canadiens defenseman. They met for dinner with coaches, players and family members under the guise of celebrating Hutson's nomination.
Unbeknownst to him, he was soon presented with the actual trophy, which was a huge shock to the defenseman. Hutson and his family couldn't hold back the emotions.
The defenseman said:
"The Rookie of the Year award, I just feel so fortunate and lucky to be a part of Montreal Canadiens and be a part of such a great support system with all my friends and family, so to be able to do what I love every day, it's been a dream. I wouldn't be here without the great support I have."
Hutson beat Macklin Celebrini from the San Jose Sharks and Dustin Wolf of the Calgary Flames for the award.
Lane Hutson hit major milestones in rookie year
Based on the voting, Lane Hutson was the best rookie in the NHL this year. He earned the Calder Trophy on the back of a historic season that saw multiple huge milestones.

Hutson helped Montreal get to the playoffs and became the fourth defenseman in the modern era to lead rookies in scoring. Only Bobby Orr (1966-67 with the Boston Bruins), Brian Leetch (1988-89 with the New York Rangers), and Quinn Hughes (2019-20 with the Vancouver Canucks) have done this.
Hutson equaled Larry Murphy (1980-81 with the Los Angeles Kings) for the most assists by a rookie defenseman ever. His 66 total points trailed just Murphy, Leetch, and Gary Suter (1985-86 with the Calgary Flames) for the most by a rookie D-man.
Hutson's 60 assists are the most by a Canadiens rookie in history, regardless of position, so to do it from a defensive spot is impressive and is part of why he won the Calder.
