Jack Hughes, an American professional ice hockey center and alternate captain for the National Hockey League's New Jersey Devils was born on May 14, 2001. The Devils selected his younger brother Luke, a University of Michigan player, in the fourth round of the 2021 NHL Entry Selection. Their father, Jim Hughes, was a former Providence College hockey player and team captain. He also worked as an assistant coach for the Boston Bruins and as the Toronto Maple Leafs' director of player development.
His mother, Ellen Weinberg-Hughes, played ice hockey, lacrosse, and soccer at the University of New Hampshire. In 2012, she was inducted into the University of New Hampshire Sports Hall of Fame. She competed for and won a silver medal with the United States women's national ice hockey team in 1992.
