His mother, Ellen Weinberg-Hughes, played ice hockey, lacrosse, and soccer at the University of New Hampshire. In 2012, she was inducted into the University of New Hampshire Sports Hall of Fame. She competed for and won a silver medal with the United States women's national ice hockey team in 1992.
