The Detroit Red Wings lost 4-0 to the New York Rangers on Saturday night. The Red Wings started well but couldn’t take advantage of their chances and had trouble stopping the Rangers' offense.
Head coach Derek Lalonde faced criticism as fans expressed disappointment over the team’s performance and lack of progress on X (formerly Twitter).
“Why is Lalonde still employed?” one fan questioned.
“Fire Lalonde,” another fan commented.
"FIRE LALONDE & SEND HUSSO BACK TO GR!!!!," one X user said.
Take a look at some more reactions from fans on X.
"Quick played an unbelievable game tonight, no question. Roster or not, Lalonde's time is up; nothing against him. The team is not playing as hard as they should. Look at the end of last year. We all see that these guys can play better. Yzerman has a plan and is sticking to it," a fan said.
"This team doesn't come close to resembling last year's team. Last year, the Wings became a cohesive team. Then, because the players worked together so well; the organization dumped excellent players to free up money for new contracts for two players, one who isn't producing," a fan commented.
"Embarrassing, time for coaching changes. The excuses will drive us to miss playoffs another season. 46 and 8 are horrible. Offense cannot finish. What the heck is going on…," a fan tweeted.
The Red Wings are second from bottom in the Atlantic Division with a 6-7-1 record after 14 games with the pressure mounting on Derek Lalonde.
Jonathan Quick records 61st career shutout in Rangers' 4-0 win over Red Wings
Jonathan Quick stopped 37 shots in the Rangers' 4-0 win over the Red Wings. His 61st career shutout helped the Rangers secure a solid victory at Little Caesars Arena.
“I didn’t know that, but I guess it shows I’ve had a good team in front of me for the last 17 seasons,” Quick said (via NHL.com). “Getting a shutout is never just down to the goalie – you need a lot of help from your teammates.”
Artemi Panarin played a key role in the win, scoring a goal and adding an assist. Jimmy Vesey, Chris Kreider, and Reilly Smith also scored for the Rangers.
Detroit's goaltender, Ville Husso, made his first appearance since opening night and stopped 20 shots in the loss. The Red Wings were coming off a 3-1 loss to Toronto on Friday and were playing the second game of a back-to-back. Despite outshooting the Rangers 19-8 in the second period, Detroit couldn’t score, and the Rangers extended their lead to 3-0.
The Red Wings struggled on special teams, especially their penalty kill, ranked 31st in the league.
