Winnipeg Jets head coach Rick Bowness has taken a leave of absence from his coaching duties. The reason behind this sudden departure is a deeply personal and concerning one, involving the health of his wife, Judy Bowness.
The Jets' official Twitter account for communications released a statement confirming the situation, which has left the hockey world in support of the Bowness family.
The statement reads:
"Sunday evening, Judy Bowness, wife of Winnipeg Jets head coach Rick Bowness, suffered a seizure and is currently in the hospital undergoing further testing. As a result, Rick is taking a leave of absence from the hockey club.
"Associate coach Scott Arniel is serving as the interim head coach until Rick returns to the team. We ask everyone to respect the family's privacy at this time."
A seizure is characterized as a burst of uncontrolled electrical activity between brain cells, which are also known as neurons or nerve cells. This surge in electrical activity causes temporary abnormalities in muscle tone or movements, which can manifest as stiffness, twitching, or limpness. Seizures can also affect behaviors, sensations, or states of awareness, depending on their severity and duration.
Judy and Rick Bowness have shared a life together, raising a family that includes two sons, Richard and Ryan, as well as a daughter, Kristen. Their close-knit family was one of Rick's support systems.
The hockey community and fans have joined in expressing their support and best wishes for Judy's recovery. This period of leave allows Rick Bowness to be with his family, offering his care and presence at this crucial time.
