"Winnipeg don't have the assets": NHL fans debate as analyst floats idea of Seth Jarvis trade to Jets

Seth Jarvis and the Carolina Hurricanes are reportedly closing in on an eight-year deal, however, so far nothing has been finalized. After a massive season last year that saw him finish with 67 points in 81 games despite playing through a torn labrum and a torn rotator cuff, Jarvis is expected to sign a massive deal.

NHL analyst Adam Gold suggests that a deal upwards of $8 million seems to be the target, however, the team also recently extended Martin Necas, further complicating a potential Seth Jarvis extension.

In the meantime, while fans wait for news on an extension, analyst Jesse Pollock has thrown out the idea of a potential trade between the Hurricanes and the Winnipeg Jets given that Jarvis is a Winnipeg native.

As he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, Jarvis would likely be willing to sign a long-term deal to play in his hometown of Winnipeg. Additionally, with several players expected to receive big paydays over the next few years, trading Jarvis would mean Carolina doesn't have to clear out more cap space.

In response to the suggestion, several NHL fans were quick to weigh in:

"Winnipeg don't have the assets, buddy. So no, they should not and they cannot" - One wrote
"Why would the Canes move Seth Jarvis? They’ll clear the necessary cap space before even thinking of trading him." - Another added

Others pointed out that Winnipeg may have missed out on their chance to acquire Jarvis:

"They could have had Jarvis at 10th in the draft, yet they took Perfetti instead. In my opinion bad move on the jets part. Jarvis is signing long term in Carolina period. Jets could make a qualifying offer for him and the canes would match instantly." - One wrote
"Should have drafted him in the first place!! Another missed opportunity." - Another added

"Should’ve just drafted him instead of Perfetti" - Another wrote

Others weighed in on a potential deal as well, reacting positively.

"Jarvy is a beauty. I’d take him over Laine all day everyday." - One wrote
"Should they? Yes. Will they? No, because there is no way in hell Carolina is letting Jarvis go" - Another added

Another report ties Seth Jarvis to Pittsburgh

While right now the most likely scenario is that the Carolina Hurricanes keep Seth Jarvis under contract given his impressive play last season, his name has repeatedly popped up in the rumor mill over the past few weeks.

There are plenty of reasons for other teams to have an interest in acquiring the 22-year-old.

In addition to a potential Winnipeg trade, as Jesse Pollock suggested, Mark Easson of NHL Rumors has also suggested Pittsburgh as a potential landing spot for the center.

Earlier this summer, Easson theorized while speaking to NHL.com that Jarvis could draw the attention of the Penguins, who could look to provide him with an offer sheet that overpays him for one season to get him out of Carolina. From there, the team could look to sign him to a long-term deal next summer.

Of course, with Jarvis being a restricted free agent, the Hurricanes could use their remaining cap space to match and keep Seth Jarvis instead, unless a team like the Penguins were to overpay him for a year to clear Carolina's RFA dibs.

In either case, this is uncharted territory for Jarvis, who revealed in an interview with NHL.com earlier this summer that he has never been in a scenario like this before. As he indicated at the time, it all depends on what the Hurricanes want to do.
