Fans reacted as the Vancouver Canucks kicked off their 2024-25 home opener in disappointing fashion, blowing a 3-0 first period lead en route a crushing 6-5 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames on Wednesday.
Brock Boeser led the way for Vancouver, netting two goals, while Connor Garland, Daniel Sprong and J.T. Miller added singles. Anthony Mantha, Rasmus Andersson, Jonathan Huberdeau, Martin Pospisil, MacKenzie Weegar and Connor Zary scored for Calgary.
Canucks goaltender Arturs Silvos stopped 20, while Dan Vladar also stopped 20 shots.
Fans on social media were quick to vent their frustration, with one writing:
"Wouldn't be a home opener without us choking"
Another wrote:
"I guess our expectations were set too high ... Goal is to make the playoffs. lets go"
Here are some more fan reactions:
"Silovs ain’t the guy. Team fell asleep for half the game but guys gotta make some saves, especially when the whole league knows your weakness," one fan tweeted.
"LOST TO A REBUILDING TEAM NOW THAT IS EMBARASSING," another wrote.
"Tocchet benching Sprong lead to us to do nothing offensively. -Silovs can’t save anything from above the hash marks. -Forbort is a pylon. -We never beat Philly. -Petey is a massive concern," one commented.
"Even though the players played horrible. I would put almost all blame on silovs. He couldn’t save a single then when it mattered. Let’s rock with lankenen," another user posted.
