As the March 3 trade deadline approaches, NHL trade rumors continue to grow more rampant. Many of the top Stanley Cup contenders are looking to add to their defensive core, with Erik Karlsson and Jakob Chychrun as the most sought-after blueliners on the trade market.
"Wherever Jakob Chychrun winds up, he now holds the unofficial world's record for appearing in trade rumors. Will somebody please get it over with and deal with the poor guy already. For sure, the New York Americans have pulled out of the bidding; as of the 42-43 season." - Stan Fischler
While these superstar defensemen are likely to be traded at the deadline, they will likely come at an exorbitant cost to the acquiring team. However, there are several cheaper defensemen being mentioned in NHL trade rumors that could end up as beneficial additions for the postseason.
Some defensemen who may be moved at the deadline include Luke Schenn, Matt Dumba and Shayne Gostisbehere are reportedly trade targets for several contenders. Here is a deeper look at the three blueliners.
1. Luke Schenn has dominated NHL trade rumors for months
Luke Schenn is one of the most sought-after names right now. A two-time Stanley Cup champion, Schenn's defensive abilities have drawn interest from several teams around the league, including the Edmonton Oilers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins.

At 33 years old, Schenn should have plenty left in the tank for teams looking to make a deep playoff run. Another reason he will likely be traded is the fact that he is a pending free agent with an affordable $850,000 contract. In comparison, Erik Karlsson carries an $11.5 million cap hit.
2. Matt Dumba has been a name heating up in NHL trade rumors
Now 10 years into his NHL career, all being spent with the Minnesota Wild, it may be time for both parties to go their separate ways. An effective member of the Wild for years, Matt Dumba may benefit from a change of scenery to help revitalize his career. If NHL trade rumors are to be believed, this may be the case for Dumba.

At 28 years old, Dumba should have plenty of gas left in the tank, making him an intriguing addition to several teams as the deadline approaches. The veteran defenseman has been linked to numerous teams, with the Seattle Kraken emerging as the ideal fit for the blueliner.
3. Shayne Gostisbehere could be on the move as well
Gostisbehere may be another alternative for teams that are unable to acquire Erik Karlsson or Jakob Chychrun. The 29-year-old was once pegged for stardom, however, he has struggled to live up to his early potential. That being said, he is still a productive defenseman who may be on the move before the trade deadline.
Following several trade rumors, the Edmonton Oilers have been linked to the defenseman as an alternative to Erik Karlsson. While he may not have teams lining up to acquire him, Gostisbehere should draw plenty of attention in the trade market.
