Playoff implications for today's game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals

Not only is it an exciting matchup between Crosby and Ovechkin, but the matchup will carry major playoff implications. The Pittsburgh Penguins hold the second Eastern Conference Wild Card spot, however, the Washington Capitals sit only four points behind them. A win for the Capitals would bring them within two points of a playoff spot.

"The Penguins take on the Washington Capitals tonight in a must win game. Here’s what to watch for. #LetsGoPens" - Inside the Penguins

So far this season, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Washington Capitals have played each other twice, splitting the series 1-1.

The rivalry between Ovechkin and Crosby began in their rookie seasons. After being selected as the first overall picks in 2004 and 2005, a lockout during the 2004-05 season led to both players entering the league in the same year.

A natural rivalry was born as two generational talents battled for the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. Ultimately, Ovechkin would walk away with the award over the future Pittsburgh Penguins captain.

"Crosby: 18 consecutive seasons of a point per game. Ovechkin: 13 40-goal seasons. No, they didn’t merely live up to the hype. They set the current standard for greatness. And they’re still doing it!" - Rob Rossi

Since then, the pair have combined for 20 All-Star appearances, 5 Hart Trophies, 4 Stanley Cups, and 11 Rocket Richard Trophies. Now, after 18 seasons in the NHL, the future Hall of Famers are set to square off tonight at 8 pm ET in Pittsburgh.
