Tyson Foerster scored his second of the season at 5:32 of the second period with Joel Farabee adding an empty-netter with less than a minute left in the game.

So, let’s take a look at the three reasons why the Boston Bruins were shut out by the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night.

3 reasons why Boston Bruins were shut out by Philadelphia Flyers

#3. The Bruins power play fell silent

The Boston Bruins' power play failed to score in four attempts. Considering Tuesday night’s matchup was essentially a one-goal game, a power-play tally could have made a huge difference. However, the B’s could not get much going with the man advantage.

The lack of offense on the power play is quickly becoming a concerning trend for Boston as the club has struggled to capitalize on power play opportunities as well as 5-on-5.

#2. The Flyers outplayed the Bruins

The Flyers outplayed the Boston Bruins despite Boston outshooting Philly. The Bruins had a 23-19 edge in the shot column. However, the numbers reflect a much different reality.

The Flyers outhit the Bruins 28-23, blocked more shots, 28-11, and won nearly 60% of the draws. In total, the Flyers registered fewer giveaways, limiting the Bruins’ ability to cash in on mistakes.

Overall, the Flyers played a solid game, arguably their best of the season. They faced a hard-hitting, tight-checking team in Boston, but matched them pound-for-pound. Kudos to Flyers’ coach John Tortorella for instilling discipline in his club.

#1. The Bruins wasted a tremendous performance by Korpisalo

Joonas Korpisalo started between the pipes for Boston on Tuesday night. He had a tremendous performance, keeping the Bruins in the game.

In particular, two saves stand out. First, Korpisalo came up huge on a Flyers’ 2-on-1. The play started with Scott Laughton coming out of the penalty box. He picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone, quickly heading into the Boston zone.

With one Boston defender rushing back, Garnett Hathaway joined the rush to make it an odd-man chance. As Laughton slid the puck across the ice, Korpisalo slid to his left to make a fantastic glove save. The highlight reel save kept the game scoreless.

Then, Korpisalo absolutely robbed Bobby Brink late in the first period with an incredible pad save. Korpisalo slid across the crease to stop the shot from Brink with a wide-open cage. The save also preserved the scoreless game.

However, the Bruins were unable to take advantage of Korpisalo’s great performance.

The Bruins will get a day off before facing the Carolina Hurricanes in what should be another tough test for the B’s on Thursday night.
