As the calendar reaches the end of August, the NHL offseason slows down considerably. The entry draft is over, free agency has shaken out for the most part and salary arbitration cases are dealt with. With training camps still weeks away, most rosters are settled except for a few loose ends, and a handful of top restricted free agents (NHL RFAs) remain unsigned, though deal announcements could drop any day. Here's a closer look at the top five NHL RFAs still available to be signed this offseason: Top 5 NHL RFAs still available to be signed #1. Seth Jarvis - Carolina Hurricanes Despite his rookie status, Carolina Hurricanes' Seth Jarvis emerged as a go-to scorer for the Canes last season where he finished with an impressive 67 points through 33 goals and 67 points in 81 games. However, Jarvis' next contract has been held up by his desire for a long-term pact versus the budget-conscious Canes preferring a bridge deal. With Carolina squeezed against the salary cap, negotiations have dragged on. Ultimately, expect an agreement before camp as Jarvis is too integral a piece, as per The Hockey News. #2&3. Moritz Seider & Lucas Raymond - Detroit Red Wings Two other top NHL RFAs also happen to be teammates: Detroit Red WIngs' Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond. The young duo represent the cornerstones of Detroit's rebuild. Both Seider and Raymond understandably want the security of a max-term deal covering their prime years as per The Athletic's Max Bultman. But the cap-flush Red Wings must weigh locking up them for the long haul. Expect active talks to continue. Still, there's likely no way Detroit risks alienating its two brightest talents. #4. Jeremy Swayman - Boston Bruins Down the coast, Boston Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman remains unsigned. With Linus Ullmark traded to the Ottawa Senators, the Bruins' crease belongs to Swayman. He posted sterling numbers last season, including a .933 save percentage. With $8,636,667 million in cap space (as per PuckPedia), Boston could accommodate Swayman's salary demands. The structure of the deal is what likely still needs to be worked out. #5. Dawson Mercer - New Jersey Devils Rounding out the list is New Jersey Devils' Dawson Mercer. Mercer built on his strong rookie debut by contributing 18 goals and 30 assists last season. Given New Jersey's tight cap picture, he's unlikely to land a long-term pact. A shorter bridge deal around $3 million AAV seems plausible as per NHL analyst Chris Fieldhouse. While talks with these five NHL RFAs have stretched deep into summer, new deals are expected to happen soon. Who do you think should get signed up next?
