When was the last time New York Rangers won the Stanley Cup? Revisiting the Blueshirts' 30-year old crowning as NHL champions

NHL: Stanley Cup Playoffs-New York Rangers at Carolina Hurricanes
The New York Rangers are now in the Eastern Conference Finals

The New York Rangers have not won the prestigious Stanley Cup Trophy for three decades. The 2023-24 season marks the 30th anniversary of their last Stanley Cup crowning in 1993-94.

The Rangers, established in 1926, are one of the NHL's "Original Six" teams. They were the first U.S. NHL team to win the Stanley Cup, achieving this in their second season (1927-28).

To date, the club has won four Stanley Cup Championships, the last of which came in the 1993-94 season when they beat the Canucks in a seven-game series. In 1927-1928, they faced the Montreal Canadiens in their first Stanley Cup Finals, emerging victorious.

Their second win came in 1932-1933 against the Toronto Maple Leafs with a 3-1 series win. In 1939-1940, they defeated the Maple Leafs again to lift the Stanley Cup, this time with a 4-2 series victory. Following a playoff drought in the 1940s to the 1960s, dubbed the "curse years," the Rangers reached the Stanley Cup Final twice in the 1970s but fell short.

They finally lifted their fourth Championship in 1993-94, which was their 10th Stanley Cup Finals appearance. Then-Rangers captain Mark Messier became the first player to have captained two different teams to Stanley Cup wins. Although initially credited with the series-winning goal, Messier later acknowledged it was likely Brian Noonan's.

Chris Kreider repeats New York Rangers 1993-94 playoff feat with third-period hat trick in Game 6

The New York Rangers just made it to the Eastern Conference Finals, beating the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 in a six-game series. Alternate captain Chris Kreider helped stage an incredible comeback against the Carolina Hurricanes, winning 5-3 in Game 6.

Kreider made history on the occasion by becoming the second Rangers player to have scored a natural hat-trick in the third period of a playoff game. The only other occurrence was in the 1993-94 playoffs when Mark Messier led the charge with a memorable hat-trick in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final against the New Jersey Devils. It was the same season the New York Rangers won their fourth and final Stanley Cup Championship.

Trailing 3-1 going into the third period, Kreider stepped up big time, scoring three goals in the final period to snatch victory from the Hurricanes. His first goal came just over six minutes into the period, narrowing the gap to 3-2.

Then, around halfway through the period, a Hurricanes penalty gave the Rangers a power play opportunity. They capitalized, with Kreider tipping in a shot from Artemi Panarin to tie the game at 3-3.

The New York Rangers kept pressing, and Kreider completed his hat trick with another goal to put them ahead. Despite a late push from the Hurricanes, the Rangers held on to the win.

Next up, they will face either the Boston Bruins or the Florida Panthers in the Eastern Conference Finals.
