The Washington Capitals were content to wait for Samsonov after drafting a goalie from Magnitogorsk, Russia, in the first round (No. 22) of the 2015 NHL Draft.
After making his Kontinental Hockey League debut with Metallurg Magnitogorsk, Washington selected Samsonov. He was rated by NHL Central Scouting as the top European goalie available in the draft. He stayed in the KHL for three more seasons before joining the Capitals on May 4, 2018.
