3 reasons why Boston Bruins defeated New York Islanders
#3. Bruins stayed out of the box
The Boston Bruins played a disciplined game, taking the matchup’s lone penalty. The Bruins promptly killed it off, leaving the Isles with a missed opportunity.
The disciplined game allowed the Bruins to save time and energy for the third-period push that landed them the win. While the Bruins didn’t get any power plays of their own in this matchup, staying out of the box was a great boost to their overall game.
#2. Their stars showed up to play
Pavel Zacha and Brad Marchand got the job done. In particular, Zacha’s two third-period goals were the deciding factor on Wednesday night.
Additionally, Marchand’s two first-period goals, including one less than a minute into the game, gave the Bruins a huge lift to start the game. It’s worth pointing out that the Islanders fought back to tie the game on Brock Nelson’s first goal of the night. However, the Bruins took the lead on Geekie’s second of the season.
In the end, Zacha ended the game with three points, while Elias Lindholm and David Pastrnak had three assists each and Marchand had a pair of goals. The offensive outpour is a positive sign for the Bruins who have struggled to score this season.
#1. Korpisalo held the fort
With the game tied at three heading into the third period, Boston's starting goaltender Joonas Korpisalo stood tall, holding the fort for the Bruins as the Islanders tried to get back into the game. The Isles outshot the Bruins 10-7 in the third, but it was Korpisalo that gave the Bruins a chance to win the game.
The Bruins’ defense also deserves credit for standing tall against the Isles. Despite being outshot, the Bruins’ D held its own, avoiding significant high-danger chances.
The Bruins will get a day off on Thursday before meeting the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night at TD Garden.
