Jordan Burroughs recently opened up about his mindset of choosing collegiate coaching as his career after watching David Taylor coach at Oklahoma State. The latter announced his retirement from competitive wrestling and started coaching in May 2024.
Burroughs has been one of the household names in wrestling, having delivered several remarkable performances and nabbing multiple wins. He competed for the Nebraska Cornhuskers during his collegiate career from 2006 to 2011, where he won two NCAA Division I titles.
Along with this, he won a gold medal in the 74kg category at the 2012 Olympic Games, six world titles, and gathered several more accolades. He was last seen on the mat during the World Wrestling Championships 2024, where he succumbed to Mohommad Nokhodi in the quarterfinals. He recently appeared on Flo Wrestling's Radio Live, where he spoke about pursuing coaching as his career after watching David Taylor.
"I have some interest from collegiate programs, so I am kind of watching it. In my career, here's what I am thinking, do I want to transition? Is collegiate coaching something that I am interested in? So, he's kind of been our test subject, he's kind of been our guinea pig for all the guys in my space, close to retirement, on the fringes of saying, 'Okay, do we sit back and rest or do we jump into this game?'" said Jordan Burroughs.
He added:
"And, the hardest part, right, I've got five little ones. There's very little work-life balance. And talking to David , I got the chance to see what he's built. He's in a good place, he's got me thinking a lot about college coaching."
Jordan Burroughs opened up about coaches using cuss words after spending time at David Taylor's Oklahoma State
Even though Jordan Burroughs isn't currently competing on the mat, he has not been completely away from the sport either. He is usually seen talking about different issues in the wrestling world, and most recently, he weighed in on coaches using cuss words while training.
Burroughs visited David Taylor at Oklahoma State to observe his coaching, and shortly after, he spoke about how he is the ideal coach when it comes to leadership, as he did not use a single cuss word while training.
"If your youth wrestling coach is cursing at your athletes, you need to find a new room. I just spent a few days at Oklahoma State, one of the most talented rooms in college wrestling. I didn’t hear a single curse word delivered by leadership during practice. The best coaches in the country, coaching the best athletes in the country — with the most on the line," said Jordan Burroughs (via X).
Jordan Burroughs has had an incredible wrestling career, as he has won six Pan American Championships, three Pan American Games titles, and six Grand Prix titles in his career.
