Luke Stanich reveals the toughest part of defeating Bo Bassett and qualifying for World Championships

Luke Stanich recently expressed confidence in his capability after defeating Bo Bassett at the 2025 U20 men's freestyle World Team Trials. Stanich dominated 2/3 rounds to defeat Bassett at the Trials, which were held at SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio, on Saturday, May 31, 2025.

Stanich overpowered Bassett in the first and third rounds of the 65 kg division. In the opening round, Stanich won by one point (3-2) in a close match. Bassett redeemed himself in the second round with a decision victory of one point and equaled the score. However, Stanich took the lead by winning the last round with a technical fall in 5 minutes and 15 seconds.

Stanich recently appeared in the Baschamania podcast hosted by Justin Basch and cohost Vincenzo Joseph. The Lehigh University sophomore expressed his joy and pride in defeating Bassett.

"Feels pretty good. I mean, that was a tough battle, all three matches. So just to win something like that is just a huge step in the right direction for me and just proves that I'm at the top, you know what I mean, and I'm not going anywhere.”

He further opened up about the most challenging part of locking horns with Bassett.

"I would say just his pace. You mean, it's hard to a lot of people don't really think I'm an offensive wrestler now because all they've ever seen me do is wrestle Bo. But I am very offensive."

The 2025 U20 World Championships will be held from August 18 to 24, in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Bo Bassett recently opened up on his subpar performance at the 2025 U20 men's freestyle World Team Trials. He also extended his best wishes to Luke Stanich and his team for the World Championships.

While acknowledging his love for the sport, Bassett geared up for his upcoming wrestling match. He added:

Bo Bassett is poised to compete next at the 2025 National Wrestling Championships in Fargo, North Dakota, from July 10-19.
