Mikaela Shiffrin reacted to a kid adorably celebrating her 99th World Cup win in the women's slalom in Gurgl, Austria. The alpine skier defeated Italian Lara Colturi and Swiss skier Camille Rast in the process.
Shiffrin extended her World Cup win tally to 97 at the 2023/24 alpine skiing World Cup season, despite facing a setback in a downhill race in Cortina d'Ampezzo. The crash not only sprained the MCL and tibiofibular ligament in her knee, but also forced her out of 11 races last season. As a result, she achieved the fourth position and had to give away the overall Crystal Globe to her strongest counterpart, Lara Gut-Behrami of Switzerland.
In the 2024/25 World Cup season, the two-time Olympian will look to redeem her top position, having already started her on a good note. After winning her 98th World Cup in Levi, Finland, on November 16, she clinched her record-extending 99th win in Gurgl, Austria on November 23, 2024.
While there were a series of congratulatory notes from fellow athletes and fans, a special reaction from a little fan made her emotional. Shiffrin took to her Instagram story to share a video of a little girl watching her slalom race and jumping excitedly when the skier clocked the winning time.
"Omg" she wrote and paired it with a few teary-eyed emojis.
Shiffrin secured her 62nd slalom victory on the World Cup circuit, marking her 145th podium finish. Next up, she wil aim for her 100th World Cup win at the Killington Ski Resort in Vermont.
Mikaela Shiffrin talked about ignoring the pressure around her 100th World Cup win
Mikaela Shiffrin, who surpassed Ingemar Stenmark's 86-win mark in 2023, revealed that performing in front of her home crowd is more important to her than feeling the pressure of her 100th win in the 2024/25 World Cup season.
"I guess there’s a bit of pressure around it, but I’ll try to ignore that. If it happens, it’s wonderful. If it doesn’t happen, nothing to cry about in the grand scheme. I hope to have a really good performance in front of the home crowd," she said after her race. (via Olympics.com)
Recently, the alpine skier took to her X handle to hilariously show distaste for her 'boring' answers when the media asked her about the post-race celebratory plans.
"I answered a Q after the race today about celebration and my answer was so boring.. like “blah blah, dont have time, blah, strength, blahhhh driving to the airport…” should have said how I actually planning to have a 3h @taylorswift13 concert the whole drive," she wrote.
The current alpine skiing World Cup season will end in Sun Valley, United States on March 27, 2025.
